The Mid Night Club had several challengers, and would duke it out in a best-of-three series to eliminate the chance of luck.

If the straight-shot layout of the Wangan Expressway wasn’t challenging enough, racers sometimes traveled to the Shuto Expressway which housed more high-speed curves along with traffic. A race was decided when the leader was too far away to be seen from the other driver. They were also stripped out as to decrease weight add improve power-to-weight ratio. Most had cars running between 400-600 horsepower and were comfortable running over 200 mph. No more than 10 percent of new members were awarded the status of a Mid Night Club driver. If they posed any sort of danger to members or other drivers, they were asked to leave. Prosepective members had to attend every single meeting as apprentices. Racing speeds were usually in excess of 190 mph, so having a 200-mph car would have put you in a good position. Your car needed to be capable of going over 160 mph. If you wanted to be a member of the club, the rules were relatively strict. In the beginning the Mid Night Club drove mostly European sports cars like Porsche 911s and Ferraris, but later swicthed to domestic options like Nissan Skylines, Toyota Supras, Fairlady Zs, and Mazda RX-7s by the 1990s.

The drivers had “Mid Night Club” stickers on their cars but began putting them on the top of their windsheilds for the Bosozoku to see who exactly was approaching behind them at a high rate of speed. It does, however, take its name from a real life group of street racers all the way from Japan.īack in the late 1980s and 1990s, a daring group of gentlemen called the Mid Night Club (or Middo Naito Kurabu if you want to practice your Japanese accent) took to the Wangan Expressway near Tokyo initially to challenge a group of meniacal bikers called the Bosozoku that would scare drivers who were communting to work late at night. My favorite feature was the ability to change the color of stock wheels, something neither Need for Speed nor Forza would allow you to do at the time. From what I have said so far, I think you can guess Midnight Club was a street racing game. Need for Speed simply did not compare to being able to change the dimensions of your wheels, interior seats, license plants, exterior lights, and gauges. The customization options were endless once you were in the garage. The fast-paced action of flying through intersections and slicing through traffic on your way to the finish line in the form of a red flare somewhere in the city of Los Angleles, San Diego, or Atlanta had my sweaty palms gripping the controller for dear life. Hustling through city streets at 150 mph in a car you made your own was so addicting. Midnight Club to this day is one of my favorite video games I’ve ever played.
